Geofumadas has been covering several events related to the subject remotely and in person; we closed this four-month 2019 cycle, with the attendance of the ESRI Users Conference in Barcelona - Spain, which was held at the 25 in April at the Institute of Geology and Cartography of Catalonia (ICGC).
Using the hashtag #CEsriBCN, at our twitter account We gave live coverage about this event where, apart from representatives of Esri Spain, we were able to see researchers, institutional actors and companies that currently use software of this brand. Modest, compared to other events where we have previously participated, the event was impeccable in organization, prioritized in the presentations and presenters. In general, the agenda was divided into 2 simultaneous round tables, plenary sessions and demonstrations focused on ArcGIS Enterprise news, alliances with SAP, AutoDesk and Microsoft.
Below we summarize the aspects that have captured our attention the most from our Geo-engineering approach.

At the beginning it was interesting, the round table where topics such as the integration of BIM and Artificial Intelligence (AI) applied to the GIS were touched. This was directed by Martí Domènech Montagut of the Corporate Technologies and Systems Services Directorate, Ilse Verly representative of Autodesk and Xavier Perarnau of SeysTic. More than interesting because of the importance of this topic, which is moving the software and hardware manufacturers for Geo-engineering. Seeing the BIM theme in this type of conference, which were generally geospatial focused, BIM as well as artificial intelligence and digital twins, helps to glimpse a future in which the solutions will form complementary packages in a flow where the user will use the best of the tools, both free and private but under a territorial approach integrated to the productive chain. ESRI's position is very marked, in continuing to build alliances that allow the interaction of multiple technologies, situation that we miss the BIMSummit 2019 that just happened here in Barcelona, where few companies talked about what they are doing to not leave aside the spatial dynamics in the framework of the life cycle of construction - operation (AECO).
Inspiring the future in the 4ª Industrial Revolution, the importance of the GeoSpatial Cloud.
After the welcome by Jaume Massó, Director of the Institut Cartogràfic i Geològic de Catalunya (ICGC), an interesting intervention by Ángeles Villaecusa - General Director at ESRI Spain began, who broke the ice with a funny video that shows the ignorance of what it really is, use and application of a GIS. Out of the jocular, the video makes clear that a Geographic Information System is much more than a tool strictly used for the preparation of maps.
The paper entitled Esri GeoSpatial Cloud: Inspiring the future at the 4ª Industrial Revolution, aimed to raise awareness of the importance of the GeoSpatial Cloud in the objectives of efficiency, effectiveness and integration that moves the industry in general but which for our context is marking out the SmartCities concept.
Villaescusa, showed participants that there are consumers of ESRI products and services in areas that many do not know, such as The Walt Disney Company, which uses GIS to model cities of their films, making them closer to their reality using geographic data.
If any of you have seen animated movies, I can tell you that I did not know that ESRI was in the final credits of the movie The Incredibles, and I did not know that in the most recent version of Blade Runner ESRI had participated in the configuration of the scenes.
The truth is that every day more companies are requiring the use of geospatial data in their projects, for modeling construction, evaluating the dynamics, and subsequently controlling the operation. This is the reason why the proximity of initiatives that have optimized the exploitation of data such as SAP or HANA, which now turn their eyes to space, is no longer surprising.
News ArcGIS Platform Key
Aitor Calero, responsible for Technology and Innovation of Esri - Spain, presented what is coming in the near future for the ArcGIS platform. In his presentation he explained how the new tools that make up the ESRI family can provide a representative added value for the consolidation of SmartCities and Digital Twins (Digital Twins).
It began with the operation of ArcGIS Hub, examples of planning and territorial management 3D with the Urban for ArcGIS platform, which supports to a certain extent the adoption of digital twins. He also showed the tool for interior cadastre with ArcGIS Indoors - with this tool it is possible to use 2D and 3D maps, visualizations and precise positioning in asset management.
In addition, he indicated the functioning of applications such as Tracker for ArcGIS. This last tool for the monitoring of the personnel that is carrying out surveys in the field, being able to share their location, can have a greater vision of the coverage that the person is performing to the required area. It works on Android and iOS devices, with expected simple features for the user, and can be configured for offline use. This application also contains tracking capabilities and a service to store and manage location routes; taking advantage of BigData Store temporary space.
Calero, gave a very interesting outline of what ESRI has to offer this year and those who come; on the part of Geofumadas we will be waiting, to test and expose their potential.
Using crowdsourcing to obtain qualitative data of citizenship - Case Aparcabicibcn
This presentation, quite entertaining, in charge of Camila González, Project Manager of Current Ecological, demonstrated how information systems help to collect data about structures or infrastructures with high social impact. In this case we spoke about bicycle parking areas, which, as is the case in Barcelona, represents a significant means of transport, including bicycle loan services.
Gonzáles explained how, applying crowdsourcing, large amounts of qualitative data from cities can be obtained efficiently. This in turn translates into the creation of a platform open to the user, who can perform their verifications before using the service.
As optimistic as it sounds, crowdsourcing needs the massive participation of users, and monitoring by the State, to ensure the dissemination of open data, in addition to the construction of applications for easy use and management. The project shown hopes to achieve at the end, a platform or system that indicates the availability / visibility of bicycle parking, if its use is safe or if its status is operational; both for making decisions about this transport ecosystem, and for solutions to the end user.
At our discretion, the presentation of the fire response case, ArcGIS Enterprise to Bombers de Barcelona, cap the GIS in real temps, directed by Miquel Guilanyà. Tècnic GIS. SPEIS- Bombers de Barcelona, who explained in detail how it is possible to create an information system / platform in real time, for the prevention and immediate response to events or adverse situations.
In general, the event met expectations, going to the point to show relevant information, of interest to attendees; as well as advances of the alliances that have been achieved in recent years with other companies, and the presentation of success stories and updates of ESRI applications. Being the event in Barcelona, it is not surprising that several papers were in Catalan; with the limitations that this could generate to users who do not speak it.
