SuperGIS, first impression

In our western context SuperGIS has not achieved a significant position, however in the East, speaking of countries like India, China, Taiwan, Singapoore -to name a few- SuperGIS has an interesting position. I plan to test these tools during 2013 as I have done with GvSIG y Manifold GIS; Comparing its functionality; For now I will only give a first view of the ecosystem in general.

Supergis

The scalability model indicates the root of this system, which was basically born with SuperGEO, a company that, trying to distribute ESRI products in Taiwan, realized that it was easier to manufacture its own product than to sell a third-party product. Now it is on all continents, with an internationalization strategy that is stated by its mission: to become among the Top 3 brands with a global presence and leadership in technological innovation in the geospatial context.

Supergis

From there, it seems to be a clone of the most used ESRI applications, such that even the names are almost exactly the same; with own adaptations that have come to give an interesting added value and of course with very cheap prices.

The main lines now that are about to launch the version 3.1a are the following:

Desktop GIS

Here the main product is SuperGIS Desktop, which contains the basic routines of a generic GIS tool in aspects such as capture, construction, data analysis and generation of maps for printing. There are some Add-ons that are free for this version, most of them to make the desktop version act as a client on data served from other extensions. Among these Add-ons are:

  • The OGC client to stick to standards like WMS, WFS, WCS, etc.
  • GPS to connect a receiver and handle the data it receives.
  • The Client for Geodatabase with which it supports to lower layers from Access MDB, SQL Server, Oracle Spatial, PostgreSQL, etc.
  • Map Tile Tool, with which you can create data that can be read with the applications of the line SuperGIS mobile and Super Web GIS.
  • Server Client, to connect to data served via SuperGIS Server and load them as layers to the desktop version with the possibility of analyzing them as if it were a local layer.
  • Image Server Desktop Client, just like the previous ones, to interact doing position, filtering and data analysis served from the image service extension.

Supergis extensionsAdditionally, the following extensions stand out:

  • Spatial Analyst
  • Spatial Stadistical Analyist
  • 3D Analyst
  • Biodiversity Analyst. This is striking because it has more than 100 assessment indices for the spatial distribution of animals in natural contexts.
  • Network Analyst
  • Topology Analyst
  • And only in Taiwan are CTS and CCTS, with which transformations can be made with projections used in this country (TWD67, TWD97) as well as connect to historical bases of spatial data of Taiwan and China.

Server GIS

These are tools for publishing maps and managing data in shared contexts. It also allows the desktop version to support services created for web versions from SuperGIS Desktop, SuperPad, WMS, WFS, WCS and KML standards as a mobile client.

To publish data you have the following applications:

  • SuperWeb GIS, interesting wizards to create web services with predefined templates based on Adobe Flex and Microsoft Silverlight.
  • SuperGIS Server
  • SuperGIS Image Server
  • SuperGIS Network Server
  • SuperGIS Globe

Developer GIS

This is a library of components for application development using OpenGL SFO standard with Visual Basic, Visual Studio .NET, Visual C ++ and Delphi.

In addition to the generic version called SuperGIS Engine are the extensions that, like the server versions, are parallel to the desktop extensions:

  • Network Objects
  • Spatial Objects
  • Spatial Stadistical Objects
  • Biodiversity Objects
  • 3D Objects
  • SuperNet Objects

Supergis pad2Mobile GIS

In mobile applications there are some with classic features, and others with specific end user version:

  • SuperGIS Mobile Engine to develop applications for mobile devices.
  • SuperPad for conventional GIS handling
  • SuperField and SuperSurv with capabilities for application in the surveying area
  • SuperGIS Mobile Tour very handy to create workflows geared to tourist destinations including embedded multimedia material.
  • Mobile Cadastral GIS, this is a specialized application for cadastral management although only available to Taiwan

Online GIS

  • SuperGIS Online
  • Data Services
  • Function Services

In conclusion, an interesting line of products that although they do not fill the endless range of ESRI, represent an economic alternative for the user with more than 25 tools. Which now adds to the List of software we have reviewed.

  1. I had the opportunity to contact SUPERGIS responsible for the European market.
Undoubtedly, SUPERGIS is going to be a fierce competitor for ESRI (I hope this is the case and decide to lower prices); but it has a marketing and service problem that I already told them about. Although they have talked with companies to market from there (as is my case), they refuse to give technical support from their own countries. From my point of view it is a mistake since you need a direct contact with such technical support.
