Build Polygon in AutoCAD based on bearings and distances in an Excel table
Let's see what the point is:
I have the data of a traverse with bearings and distances, and I want to build it in AutoCAD.
The table has the following structure of the topographic survey:
Station | Input data | Course | |
---|---|---|---|
1 2 | 29.53 | N 21° 57′ 15.04″ W | |
2 3 | 34.30 | N 21° 18.51″ W | |
3 4 | 19.67 | N 16° 14′ 20.41″ E | |
4 5 | 38.05 | N 10° 59′ 2.09″ E | |
5 6 | 52.80 | N 89° 16′ 30.23″ E |
Previously we saw that AutoCAD Has its shape to feed this type of data in the format @vdistancia < angle.
Well, here is the table:
1. The input data
These are entered under the yellow zone, here enter the stations, distances and heading as the example.
2. The initial coordinate
This is in the heading of the zone in green, assuming that we know the coordinate of the first point. If you do not have it, place any value, preferably high so that negative coordinates do not appear, such as 5,000 (five thousand)
3. The output data
This is the area marked in orange, where what you have is the xy coordinates concatenated with a separating comma.
4 How to send it to AutoCAD.
Simple, "copy" is made in the orange area of the excel file, then in AutoCAD the polyline command (pline) is activated and "paste" is made in the command bar. The result is the traverse drawn just to give the closing point
Here you can download the template to build polygons based on directions and distances in an Excel table.
It requires a symbolic contribution for the download, which you can do with Credit card or Paypal.
It is symbolic if one considers the utility it provides and the ease with which it can be acquired.
5 How to send it to Microstation
To do it in Microstation I have created a template that does almost the same thing, but in the logic of the Microstation Key-in command.
View template for Microstation.
Learn how to make this and other templates in the Excel-CAD-GIS cheat course.

I have a problem. When I acquired the template everything worked fine, that was like 4 or 5 years ago,
I have used it without problems. Currently it does not work for me when I paste it into Autocad. I have tried in Autocad 2013 and 2017 and nothing. I do not know if I have to see and excell, I am using 2019. Previously I used 2016.
Hello Jose.

I made payment by paypal. Where can I download the template?
I would like to warn you to send money by Pay Pal to your name by the templateExcel
Very good, to build in ArcGIS is used cogo
http://www.acolita.com/herramienta-cogo-en-arcgis-levantamientos-topograficos/
You have to use the concatenate in Excel, but using Place Line.
Then you paste it into a txt file and call it with a Keyin
This article explains how.

Good morning to all and congratulations for this good work.
I have a question.
How do I do in MICROSTATION so that I do not just leave the point cloud but also the lines that would make up the polygonal?
Thank you.
Excel your excel sheet !! You saved me!
In this other article I have published another way of doing it with Microstation, using the concatenation in Excel and not the txt file
http://geofumadas.com/dibujar-un-polgono-con-rumbos-y-distancias-de-excel-a-microstation/
Anyone know how to enter all the data in one go ??
AYUDAAAAAAAA
True, it could work for any program that accepts coordinates in that format.
Possibly there are extensions for ArcGIS, but I have never talked about that topic here.
Hello, you just saved my life with this post, I needed to do a traverse in ArcGIS so I used this method and only suited it for ArcMap, I do not know if there was an easier way to do it for this program or if you had already published some Post on this, but good served me a lot, it would be good that they also put the post to pass it to ArcGIS. Thank you very much !!!!!! Congratulations on this page, saludooooos.
Thank you…!!
For the help, now if the polygon is left… ^ _ ^
That changes it in Windows
Start, Control Panel, Regional Settings
Then there, you choose the country where you are and with this you should have the correct points and commas in the gray area, down where the examples are. First are the numbers.
If they appear incorrect there, even choosing your country, then press the "customize" button and there change the format of decimal symbol and thousands separation symbol.
I have a problem to get the drawing in autocad, the problem radiates in the following.
The problem is in the table of exel of my office I need to know how to change the comma (,) by the Point (.) I have office 2007.
To me it appears as follows:
418034 (,) 128,1590646 (,) 877
418028 (,) 562,1590680 (,) 724
418034 (,) 064,1590699 (,) 614
Where there has to be a dot (.) There is a comma (,) help my please. !!
Hello everyone, I have been using MicroStation for cadastre for several years and I just wanted to add to the excellent contributions of my colleagues that if they want to add a polygon in addition to the points, the procedure is very simple. In the header txt sheet we write “place smartline”, to each coordinate we add xy= coordinate x, coordinate y. so on to all. in the Key-in input we write @C:\name and location of the file.txt That is the theory of the procedure if anyone knows another procedure I would appreciate the contribution.
Well of course, the order is X - Y
I need to make a plan in autocad .. because I enter coordinates and x and I get the plane shot
Thanks brother for the help, I really saved a lot of work with this table, congratulations on the development of the formulas, very good work ..
I did not find the v8i
V8 xm edition
What version do you have?
V8 or V8i
How about, I already have the microstation site, I do not know if you can help me with the procedure and try a little but it has several tools.
It's okay with you.
Good Thanks boy look for the microstation site and boy approve
To make a table of distances and distances occupy Microstation Site, just like you can not do it only with AutoCAD but Civil employees.
But you can do the reverse process of this post With this excel table
Well I think it's interesting, how do you solve, I have a problem I can not get a construction box (directions and distances) of a polygonal already made in microstation v8 xm or v8i, as it is done in civilcad that you only the polygonal tool and you give it generate construction chart and spades within the drawing or pligonal, they will attack them will help me
I have not seen a lisp that does that, which could help you is this . The code has no password, so either modify it to provide the other information, or leave it in the column of observations with the function concatenate.
g
Thanks, but I think I need to clarify something, I want to avoid doing it manually, to be automated using a lips, to gratify the data by importing the excel file.
Well I understand that if it is just that line, you only do:
- Command line
- enter
- 227935.1665,9111959.809,2618.718896
- enter
- 227935.1665,9111959.809,2618.718896
- enter
And then you put the data on foot as text.

I CONGRATULATE YOU OR THE CONTRIBUTION Q DAS IN THIS PAGE SO INTERESTING. GOOD WANTED TO KNOW IF YOU CAN HELP ME TO GRAPH AUTOCAD THESE DATA OF EXCEL, THAT I DIVIDED A LINE WITH ALL THE INFORMATION ID, COORDINATES OF START OF THE LINE, LENGTH, AZIMUT AND INCLINATION (INCL) FROM THE XY PLANE.
I WILL BE GRATEFUL HELP.
ID EAST NORTH ELEVATION LONG.” “AZIMUTH” “INCL.”
01 227935.1665 9111959.809 2618.718896 150 84.295 -19.22
02 227935.1665 9111959.809 2618.718896 130.25 84.295 -19.22
I congratulate you, it is an excellent page and above all with a lot of very useful information for those of us who dedicate ourselves to this topography and geodesy ...
I have also been checking the information you have regarding the use of geographics (or gedesics) and UTM ... I am struggling a bit with the transformation of Geographies to Topographic, that is, I want to convert from geodesics to a flat system, in such a way that the points or vertices that we placed and did a post-process, we can use them with total station or any conventional equipment and the distances check or coincide ... your comments would be very helpful ... thanks and greetings from tampico, tamaulipas, mexico ...
And the coordinate is in geographical or in utm?
good friends I wanted to know if you can help me as I can manually pass a coordinate from a gps to autocad
If that were it, maybe it would check in the control panel, locale, and see if the commas are as thousands separators and the decimal point.
you know I think the problem lies in the configuration of commas and periods…. from excel
ahhhhhhhh good page huh ...
ok thanks, everything turned out calmly….
you were right the fault is when copying the data incorrectly ... thousands of thanks ...
Well check the order of what you're doing:
Command point (or line)
Select the area in excel
Copy
Click on the AutoCAD command line
Take
don't make a mistake pasting the correct data, something is happening, there I have another format in excel that is very useful for making road alignments, it is very similar to this format but in both cases I get this message "2d point or option keyword required" going to autodesk land, I do not understand?.
If you want to pass the format in excel just write your email….
It is very interesting
AAA IF YOU FIND THE SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM, Spread the word….
I have another format similar to this one, it is to make road alignments and go to autodesk land, it is very similar to this format, I have already used the format I have and it worked well for me and then that message "2d point or option keyword required" appeared and My polygon does not appear, and I am not making a mistake in copying the data. IF YOU WANT I WILL PASS YOU THE FILE IN EXCEL WRITE YOUR EMAIL …….
AAA PLEASE IF YOU HAVE ALREADY FOUND THE SOLUTION, PASS THE VOICE, I DON'T KNOW IF THE PROBLEM IS THE AUTO CAD CONFIGURATION OR SOMETHING FAILS IN THE EXCEL….
Joshua, I think you're copying the wrong area, you should copy the marked orange
2d point or option keyword required also appears to me and I can't find a solution if you know it, please help me, it's urgent, please …….
Excellent file will serve me a lot and I am already asking what I was asking about how to convert cross sections of traffic and level to UTM…. I will test it for an open traverse
Jcpescotosb@hotmail.com
It is possible that you have mistaken the format of commas and points, this you must verify it in control panel, regional configuration. It will work if you have the points as decimal separations and commas as thousands separation.
I did the test in Autocad 2009 and it worked fine but microstation not
It will be that I do not do the right thing in some of Microstation V8 xm.
Let's see:
1. Polyline command
2. You write 0,0
3. enter
4. Copy in the orange area of the excel sheet
5. Click on the command line
6. Get ctrl + v
7. Enable full-view zoom
If it is not working, something weird is going around. Another option that may be affecting is its commas and points are confused in the separating properties of thousands and decimals
Good afternoon
WHAT HAPPENS IS I NEED TO ENTER TOPOGRAPHIC COORDINATES TO AUCTOCAD.
WHEN I CLICK TO COPY THEN I GO AND SELECT POLILINE WRITING 0,0 AND APPEARS SPECIFY THE FOLLOWING POINT APPEARS THIS [Arc / Halfwidth / Length / Undo / Width
AND I DO HELP TO THIS AND I PEGO BUT IT APPEARS THIS (2D point or option keyword required) I HAVE NOT HOW TO MAKE IT APPEAR THE POLIGONOUS I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF YOU CAN HELP ME.
René, the coordinates come out because we have assumed an initial coordinate.
I think that from these directions we can not get the utm coordinates because those directions are not geographic coordinates. A great contribution to separate coordinates with a comma
En this post We saw how to do it backwards, from points.
Very good spreadsheet, could be made on the contrary from a polygon make a table with Rumbos, Azimuth, Distance, Azimuts with a known base?
