Promoting initiatives: DielmoOpenLiDAR

Ago a few days i talked of the efforts that are carried out in terms of LIDAR data management, so today I transmit a formal statement that DIELMO 3D SL has published

DielmoOpenLiDAR: New free software for handling data LIDAR

For more than 5 years DIELMO 3D SL has been working on the development of software for the processing of LiDAR data, using it internally for the production of Digital Terrain Models (MDT) in numerous projects, obtaining greater quality and precision in the final products than that offered by commercial software currently available on the market.

Until recently, our intention was to re-design our software for the processing of LiDAR data from the beginning to convert it into commercial software oriented data providers, however, with the help of the ITC we have decided to take the initiative to develop a new free software for the processing of LiDAR data orientated to the end user, in front of the more traditional line focused on commercial software.

Finally, with the help of the Department of Infrastructure and Transport of the Generalitat Valenciana (CIT) we have decided to take the initiative to create DielmoOpenLiDAR

DielmoOpenLiDAR is a free software with a GNU GPL license based on gvSIG for the handling of LiDAR data. At the moment we have developed a Driver for accessing LiDAR data in gvSIG. This driver is the basis for handling data in different standard formats, so that gvSIG is provided with the basic tools that allow developers to work with LIDAR data in the most transparent and simple way possible. On the other hand, gvSIG users will also be allowed to open original LiDAR data (LAS and BIN), visualize them superimposed on any other geographical information, consult the original values of each of the points and edit them.

Once the bases for the developments related to LiDAR data in gvSIG have been established, the next phase will consist of developing all the necessary tools to be able to perform a LiDAR data processing complete with gvSIG. On the one hand we will provide gvSIG with automatic calculation algorithms and on the other hand we will implement manual editing tools that allow quality control of the results. From the basic products that we will have managed to produce in the second phase of the project, the third phase consists of developing intelligent tools for the creation of new final value-added products.

With the development of this free software for LiDAR data management, DIELMO 3D aims to bring the use of LiDAR technology closer to standard GIS users and the scientific community, with the aim of extending its use. In addition, there is currently a tendency for more and more LiDAR data to be available that cover large areas of the territory and in a few years time all this information will be free so that anyone can access it. For example, LiDAR data from all over the Basque Country are currently available and can be obtained through the Provincial Council of Guipúzcoa and the Cartography Service of the Department of the Environment and Regional Planning of the Basque Government.
