Cold Numbers of the Top 40 Geospatial on Twitter

At one time we did not think that the activity of a Twitter account could become very important. But in a world where we drown in content oceans, the three hours of a Tuit's life become attractive if we consistently and selectively extract those headlines that represent knowledge, rather than information.

This, coupled with the discipline of 2 to 5 daily publications and selective tracking creates a value added of more than interesting growth in tracking as well as in retuiteo and favorites.

Twitter is a lot like reading the headlines of a printed newspaper. Valuable for the determinants, disappointing if their real content is poor. The next day they hardly serve to wrap fish.

Monitoring the Top 40 of Twitter accounts In the geospatial sector, these are some cold numbers, to the 29 of June of 2015:

Important Movements

For an account to remain competitive, it must have a semiannual growth above 10%. Less of that means losing seats to the average that grows between 11% and 15%.

The table shows in the fourth column how growth has been during these six months. In red accounts with growth down 10%, in green those that have had a growth of 25%.

1 Zone - Top 1 - The 50% of traffic is concentrated in 6 accounts.

  • This area changes little. The variant is in @gisday that grew an 32%, shifting @gersonbeltran that just grew an 7%.

Zone 2 - Transition - An 15% contains three accounts.

These bid to continue ascending in an extremely difficult area. If current trends continue, @ MundoGEO could fall to this area due to low activity.

Zone 3 - The queue.

The remaining accounts that make up the 35% traffic are separated into 4 segments:

Tail Q1

This represents an 8% of traffic, with growths within the normal range.

Tail Q2

6 accounts represent this 10%, with interesting growths of @masquesig (32%) and mappinggis (28%)

Tail Q3

7 accounts that represent the 9%. With accelerated growth @egeomate, @NewOnGIScafe and MappingInteract

Tail Q4

Here only accelerated growth in @COMUNIDAD_SIG

Predictions for December 2015

@mappinggis is going to go up to Tail Q1 by moving to @URISA that will be falling to Tail Q2, after being overtaken by @geomate as well.

@WorldGEO is going to fall to the transition zone, @gisday will be fighting the exit of Top1 with MundoGEO, to the edge of 15,500 followers.

@COMUNIDAD_SIG is going to raise 5 seats always in Tail Q4, with some 1,129 followers.

@orbemapa is going to fall to Tail Q4. -I do not think so, with the change of routine that has taken, will overcome the 3,200 followers, beating @Tel_y_SIG and Cadalyst_Mag. Always on the Tail Q3.

  1. Estimados:

I'd like to suggest you take a look at our Twitter account (https://twitter.com/GeoInnovaASL - 2.649 followers) and our blog (http://geoinnova.org/blog-territorio) To consider entering your list.

As guarantees I can tell you that from our blog we offer information and training of GIS and Environment, also managing, for example, the Facebook group «Tutorials, GIS tools and courses» with more than 18K members (https://www.facebook.com/groups/MundoGIS).

Thank you for your dedication and effort to the GIS community.

  2. Good analysis! And necessary to know the geomatic state of the Network.
In my case I hope that the predictions are not met (:

  3. How would you see a list that shows only accounts that publish predominantly in Spanish?
