Development in Free Software as engine of change

Almost everything is ready for the 7as gvSIG Latin America and Caribbean seminars, which will be held in Mexico.

We find valuable the gradual addition of public institutions, which for year have been controlled by proprietary software, a process in most situations started from the implementation of international financing projects that tend to be tied to the use of specific brands. Changing this is not easy, if we consider the weakness in the public administration in terms of the turnover of qualified human resources and the influx of piracy, which is the other driving force.

The fact that these events are organized from the academy is extremely valuable, in this case the Faculty of Geography of the UAEM.

As subject, it is using “Development in free software as engine of change“, quite appropriate for the Mesoamerican context, accustomed to hearing the term “development” and that recalls failed efforts to force schemes not adapted to the context. Moving the OpenSource model as an incentive to provide a meeting place for technicians, researchers, developers, experts and users in general, is an interesting point that until now no one has been promoting in this way. Local acceptance is expected to gradually generate a fabric that maintains a balance between sustainability and “profit”, which no one should fear and which, unfortunately, is necessary for everyone to win.

The topics are more than rich and useful for the entire Latin American context: electrical networks, remote archeology, road collisions, civil defense, criminal diagnosis, urban expansion. Surely the gvSIG Association is aware that so much wealth carries the risk of being atomized without a common thread that directs a strategic and intentional effort to develop solutions for generic use, without remembering that the problems in this context are almost the same.

Debating is good, exposing, teaching. It seems important to us that gvSIG is visible from successful use cases. We suggest that more force should be put into the ax of the systematization of experiences and processes, remembering that in these places the clean slate of institutional changes makes efforts lose the edge. Also because it is the ancestral custom of these lands to reinvent warm water, sometimes due to the lack of systematization, others due to pride.

Free geomatics is all the rage, and that's good. Beyond the geospatial areas, the academy has professionals who can bet on a strategic complement to the technical part, to land the spatial smoke on the heads of decision makers who take the instrumentation to public policies.

The appointment is August 26, 27 and 28. You have to hurry because although entry is free, space is limited.

For now I advance the papers that are distributed in two parallel halls:

  1. Hello,

A little correction. The headquarters of the conference is in the UAEM, not in the UNAM (although the UNAM is one of the organizations that supports the event).

Thank you for sharing the conference!
